So you’ve decided to join our world – the Biker’s world. Travelling on two wheels is both fun and rewarding, you will very rarely get stuck in traffic and you will have a greater sense of the world around as you as you ride. Plus, you will benefit from much more economical motoring compared to our four-wheeled-driving friends.
Not only is your insurance likely to be cheaper than that of a car during your teenage years but you will be able to travel much further per gallon of fuel whilst also emitting less harmful gases and helping the environment.
There are a couple of restrictions that may help you choose which motorcycle or scooter is for you*:
Aged 16?
You are able to ride a moped (a maximum engine capacity of 50cc and capable of no more than 45km/h) using a provisional
driving licence and after completing a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course.
Aged 17?
You are able to ride a scooter or motorcycle with a maximum engine capacity of 125cc and with a power output not
exceeding 11kW using a provisional licence and after completing a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course.
A new rider must first apply for a provisional driving licence – you can apply for your licence here: https://www.gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence
You must then complete a CBT – this is not an exam! This is simply a day of training carried out by professional Motorcycle Instructors in order to ensure that you’re safe on the road. You can find more details here: https://www.robinsonsrochdale.co.uk/ridertraining
Now you’re entitled to display L-plates on your new machine. All that’s left is to ensure that you have the correct insurance in place along with the relevant safety equipment and your two wheeled adventure can begin…
